Angelique
isthisyours?

This new theatre installation by isthisyours? tells a promenade ‘coming of age’ tale about a curious, rebellious young girl Angelique. While she appears to be your average inquisitive teen, Angelique is in fact starting to see the world crack open in front of her eyes: her sister is missing, her parents are acting like strangers, and a talking bird haunts her day and night.

LONG DESCRIPTION

Curiously Alice in Wonderland-esque in its quirky, black-comedic narrative, Angelique captures audiences’ imaginations.

Shocked at seeing her father destroy this peculiar parrot, Angelique is forced to exit her world’s now shattered confines. But then the theatre also cracks open, and the audience are invited into this broken new world where an untrustworthy character, a series of unaddressed letters, and a troupe of over-excited ushers coax them to explore the rest of the theatre.

Angelique engages its audience in a way never before seen, offering a chance to explore the rabbit-hole of possibilities within the story and also the theatrical mechanisms of its creation; posing questions on the individual versus the collective and ultimately highlighting the fabrication in the idea of ‘choice’.

Collaborating with acclaimed playwright Duncan Graham, designers Jonathon Oxlade, Chris Petridis and composer Alice Keath, isthisyours? create a wonderful theatrical world for an audience to explore. Supported by Adelaide Festival Centre Trust, Arts SA and Insite Arts, this sell-out production premiered at the iconic Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide in October 2017.

“Angelique not only turns the tables on conventional theatre, but also turns it inside out and leaves us hanging on; upside down.” – Gordon Forester, Limelight Magazine.

Presented by Insite Arts and The Adelaide Festival Centre as part of the inSPACE program.

This project was supported by Vitalstatistix’s Incubator residency program, Country Arts SA’s Forged Works program and the State Theatre Company SA’s Company Residency Program.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

“Nothing is at seems in Angelique, a spectacular comedy drama that is a journey through the inner workings of Angelique’s mind as well as the venue, Her Majesty’s Theatre.” David Knight, The Adelaide Review

“Angelique is funny and disturbing, and its epilogue is a dark warning. isthisyours? turns the theatre upside down to ask these questions, and we would do well to think carefully about them.” Murray Bramwell, The Australian
